Practical ideas to build healthy, resilient young people

What is this thing we call resilience?

The term resilience is used in mental health to describe a person’s capacity to cope with changes and challenges, and to bounce back during difficult times. The focus of Mark’s work, and this very practical seminar, is to show parents how to be the BEST resilience coach for their children.

Why is resilience in human beings such a prized quality?

Resiliency is such a prized quality as it positions individuals for the inevitable challenges that await them in the future. While the interplay of genetics and environment on resiliency are complex, there is much we can do to steer our children in healthy, more resilient directions.

So, come on, take the challenge with me; let’s explore what you can realistically do to improve your children’s happiness, resiliency and mental health. There’s a lot you can be doing. So often it is the simple easy to remember strategies that engage children to think realistically and logically, that transforms behaviour and sets up healthy, resilient lives

Reminder Anzac Film Permission Forms need to be returned ASAP

Dear parents,

Well done to everyone who returned their forms already – we only have 68 children out of 641 who haven’t returned their permission forms as of today!  That’s a pretty good effort.

However, we are about to start filming some learning activities and this is very hard to organise if we do not have permission to use your child’s images for this project.

Your child’s teacher will have already provided a duplicate form for you to complete but if you need another, please just ask the class teacher.  If you do not give permission for your child to appear in the film and end credits, please write no in the appropriate sections on the form.

If you have any queries, please email me at louisa.guest741@schools.sa.edu.au or call 8276 1523

CLGPS Film Project for the Anzac Day Centenary

Dear families,

As you would have seen in the newsletter blogpost on 13th January 2015, we applied for and won a grant to celebrate the Anzac Day Centenary.

We intend to produce a 15-20 minute film about WWI and the meaning of ANZAC Day in a local context as told and shown by the children.  This film will involve our entire school community and will become a piece of history in itself.

We have created a special blog website for our project. We strongly suggest that you and your extended family subscribe to the blog so you receive all the latest updates. The blog can be found at www.clgpsanzac.edublogs.org We would love you to share this blog with the wider community, your friends and families.

Our CLG Primary School site was originally part of the Mitcham Army Camp, used for WWI training (including Light Horse) from 1915 to 1920. The camp extended through the majority of present-day Colonel Light Gardens.  The more people we can involve in telling our story, the better! Keep an eye out for when we ask for family stories, artefacts, etc to include in our film.

Each child attending CLG in 2015 needs a special permission form signed by parents for his/her image/creative work/audio to be included in this historic film. All students need to return this form to us, even if permission is not given. A paper copy of this form is being sent home on Monday 2nd March. Please return the completed form to your child’s teacher by Friday 13th March 2015.

Any adults appearing in the film as volunteers in classrooms, guest speakers, on excursions, etc will also need to complete a release form which will be provided at the time of filming.

Please contact

Louisa.Guest741@schools.sa.edu.au or Sue.Woollard725@schools.sa.edu.au if you have any questions about this exciting project.

Reminder – free parent workshop Wednesday 18th Feb!

Invitation

CLGPS is pleased to present a seminar on

MANAGING THE PHYSICAL HEALTH IMPACTS OF COMPUTER USE ON CHILDREN

WITH PHYSIOTHERAPIST AND PARENT: GREG CAMPBELL B App Sc (Physio)

Wednesday 18th February 2015, CLGPS Gym 7-8pm

RSVP by Monday 16th Feb 2015

Tablets, laptops, desktops, phones, hand held devices are now common place for the school aged child both at home and at school. Our children don’t consider these devices as “technology” just “their stuff”.

  • Are you concerned with the amount of screen time that your child is having?
  • Do you know how to correctly set up their ergonomics?
  • Are you aware of the long term impacts of their IT use on their physical health and wellbeing?

Poorly set up laptop, tablet and desktop computers for children may lead to poor postures, neck, back and shoulder pain and headaches.  Smart Health Training & Services (Smart Health) has been investigating the research that relates to the physical health impact of computer use on children for over 3 years. Over that time Greg Campbell has worked in schools delivering seminars and resources to school communities with students from years 1 to 12 as well as teachers and parents on these issues, working with schools to find long-term sustainable solutions.  This seminar will present the solutions that are most pertinent for schools and parents who are supplying their students/children with these devices and share successful approaches that have been taken at other schools.

Please click on the link below to print off your RSVP slip for this FREE workshop OR email me at Louisa.guest741@schools.sa.edu.au.
